1 Skillet For browning the ground beef.
1 Knife To slice potatoes and other vegetables.
1 Mandoline Slicer Optional, for slicing potatoes evenly.
- 1 lb Ground Beef Lean ground beef 80/20 or 85/15.
- 4 Potatoes Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes sliced.
- 1 Cup Shredded Cheddar For the cheesy topping.
- 1 Cup Sour Cream Optional for added creaminess.
- 1 Onion Diced for flavoring the beef.
- 1 tsp Garlic Powder For seasoning.
- 1 tsp Onion Powder For seasoning.
- 1 tsp Salt To taste.
- 1/2 tsp Black Pepper To taste.
- 1/2 tsp Red Pepper Flakes Optional for a little spice.
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 casserole dish with butter or cooking spray.
In a skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned. Drain excess fat.
Add diced onion, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes to the beef. Stir and cook for 2 minutes.
Slice the potatoes evenly and par-cook them in boiling water for 5-7 minutes. Drain and set aside.
Layer the potatoes in the greased casserole dish, followed by the ground beef mixture.
Repeat the layering process until all ingredients are used.
Spread sour cream (optional) on top of the casserole and sprinkle with shredded cheddar cheese.
Cover the casserole with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes to allow the cheese to brown and the casserole to become crispy on top.
Let it rest for 5 minutes before serving.
You can customize the casserole by adding vegetables such as peas, carrots, or corn for added nutrition.
For a lighter version, use lean turkey or chicken in place of ground beef and swap the potatoes for cauliflower for a low-carb version.
Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for up to 4 days in the fridge.
